MANILA, Philippines – Muling ipinanawagan ng isang opisyal ng Publishers Association of the Philippines (PAPI) nitong Biyernes, Setyembre 20 ang dekriminalisasyon ng libel kasabay ng ika-50 anibersaryo ng grupo.
Ayon kay Johnny Dayang, PAPI chair emeritus, umaasa siyang maipapasa ito para sa mas mababang epekto ng cyberlaws sa press freedom, transparency at accountability mula sa executive branch, at compassionate at fair treatment ng press freedom cases ng judiciary.
“In fine, my wish list is to see Congress passing a law that decriminalize libel and reduce the impact that cyberlaws have imposed on a free press,” saad sa speech ni Dayang.
Sa ilalim ng administrasyon ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., binanggit ni Dayang ang mga pangako nitong pauunlarin pa ang press sa kabila ng economic challenges at pag-usbong ng social media.
“In the end, we must look up to the reality that journalists, whether classified as reporter, editor or publisher, even if they are branded at times as creepy-crawlies, remain as the mouthpiece of democracy and its embodied liberties,” dagdag pa niya.
Iginiit ni Dayang ang pangangailangan ng mas matibay na batas para protektahan ang press freedom. RNT/JGC
