MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ni Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. noong Biyernes na kailangan ng Pilipinas ng mas malaking pamumuhunan sa mas advanced na teknolohiya upang maging mas episyente at eksakto ang depensa ng bansa.
Ayon kay Teodoro, ipinakita sa tatlong linggong “Balikatan” exercises ang paggamit ng makabagong teknolohiya ng militar na nagwakas nang walang malalaking injury, collateral damage, o maling target.
“I believe that this demonstration, complex as it is, really will underscore to the host country’s audience, the Filipinos, the need to preserve our military spaces and to invest in higher technology because with precision comes safety,” aniya.
Dagdag niya, “And this needs investments in skill sets, in infrastructure and in capabilities.”
Ilan sa mga ipinakitang kagamitan sa exercise ay advanced missile at rocket systems mula sa United States at Japan, na may kakayahang tumukoy at tumama sa target mula sa malalayong distansya.
“I also look forward to the next iteration’s activities so that we can incorporate more in scope, not necessarily in scale, more scenarios, more technology, transfer of learning, but more importantly, more deterrence and more interoperability,” dagdag pa ni Teodoro.
Ayon sa kanya, rerepasuhin ng DND ang resulta ng Balikatan 2026 upang makita ang mga kailangang pagbutihin sa susunod na drills.
Ang Balikatan 2026 na ginanap mula April 20 hanggang May 8 ay nilahukan ng humigit-kumulang 17,000 sundalo mula sa Pilipinas, US, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, at New Zealand.
Samantala, sinabi ni Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. na plano nilang bumili ng karagdagang missile systems na ginamit sa exercise.
“We have plans of procuring more of the missile systems that we saw recently used here in the Balikatan exercise,” ani Brawner.
Dagdag niya, mahalaga rin ang integrated air and missile defense para maprotektahan ang bansa laban sa posibleng pag-atake.
“So the air, the integrated air and missile defense as well, has to come into the picture… then we will have to have these types of weapons,” aniya.
Giit pa niya, dapat umasa pa rin ang Pilipinas sa sarili kahit may mga kaalyado ito. “Although we have, of course, our allies and partners, but we first have to rely on ourselves,” dagdag niya.
Sinabi rin ni Brawner na nakabatay ang modernisasyon ng AFP sa mga bagong teknolohiya sa digmaan tulad ng missiles at drones, at pinag-aaralan din ang pagpapalawak ng Balikatan coordination system sa labas ng bansa para sa mas mabilis na komunikasyon ng mga allied forces.
Samantala, sinabi ni US Indo-Pacific Command Admiral Samuel Paparo na nananatiling “dangerous environment” ang rehiyon dahil sa territorial disputes at coercive actions, partikular sa Indo-Pacific at South China Sea, na direktang nakaapekto sa Pilipinas. RNT/MND
