MANILA, Philippines- Mahigpit na kinalampag ni Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III si Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero na kaagad simulan ang impeachment trial laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte dahil tungkulin ng Senado na gawin ito.
Sa kanyang liham kay Escudero na may petsang Pebrero 14, binanggit ni Pimentel ang Section 3(4), Article XI ng 1987 Constitution na nagsasabing:
“In case the verified complaint or resolution of impeachment is filed by at least one-third of all the Members of the House of Representatives, the same shall constitute the Articles of Impeachment, and trial by the Senate shall forthwith proceed.”
Sinabi ni Pimentel na pinakapapahulugan ng salitang “forthwith” ang agaran at madalian.
“The above elaboration affirms that it is the Senate’s duty to act on the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte ‘without any delay’ or ‘without interval of time.’ I repeat that this is the Senate’s DUTY,” aniya sa liham kay Escudero.
Nitong Lunes, inihayag ng Supreme Court na nai-raffle na ang petisyon na atasan ang Senado na simulan ang impeachment trial laban kay Duterte. Kabilang na ito sa agenda ng Senado ngayong Martes kasama ang iba pang petisyon.
Noong nakaraang Pebrero 5, inendorso ng 215 kongresista ang impeachment complaint laban kay Duterte saka isinumite noong araw na iyon ang Articles of Impeachment sa Senado.
Ngunit, nag-adjourn ang Senado nang hindi tinatalakay ang impeachment complaint.
Naunang sinabi ni Escudero na nakatakdang simulan ang impeachment trial pagkatapos ang State of the Nations Address sa July 21 sa ilalim ng 20th Congress. Ernie Reyes
