ENTERING law school at any age is a challenge, but doing so while managing work, family, and other responsibilities adds an entirely new layer of complexity. As someone who has completed a post-doctorate degree and co-written a book on leadership, I never envisioned myself pursuing a legal career. Yet, when my former classmates and I challenged each other to enter law school, I took the leap—not just for myself, but also for my daughter.
My daughter, like many young professionals, is balancing work and family. She has a five-month-old child and holds a job order contract in the Office of the President. Understandably, she’s hesitant to add law school to her plate right now. However, I believe that education is one of the most empowering tools for self-improvement, and I wanted to support her dream of becoming a lawyer. I figured if I enrolled, it might inspire her to take the plunge, too.
The decision to enter law school wasn’t easy. Like many working professionals, I had to weigh the sacrifices and challenges, especially at my age. I was motivated by the thought of my daughter but also found inspiration in others who had walked this path. One of my biggest sources of encouragement came from Lydia Bueno, a remarkable woman juggling her role as the managing editor of Remate, former president of the National Press Club, and a former Lions Club chapter president, all while attending law school herself. Her ability to manage her responsibilities and thrive in law school, despite the obstacles, showed me that age and circumstance are not barriers to pursuing further education.
Balancing law school with work and family responsibilities is undoubtedly demanding, but it’s also a testament to the passion for self-improvement. It’s about proving to ourselves—and others—that we are capable of more, no matter our age. For me, the journey isn’t just about acquiring a law degree but about setting an example of perseverance for my daughter and showing her that it’s never too late to chase a dream.
Best of luck to everyone taking the bar exams on September 7, 11, and 15! May you all be blessed and guided through this important milestone.
