MANILA, Philippines- Posibleng hamunin ni Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. sa korte ang panibagong suspensyon na ipinataw ng Kamara laban sa kanya, ayon sa kanyang abogado.
Bumoto ang Kamara nitong Miyerkules upang suspendihin si Teves sa loob ng 60 pang araw, at inalisan siya ng lahat ng committee memberships sa chamber dahil sa kanyang unauthorized absences.
“We are not foreclosing…judicial recourses with respect to the actions of the House committee on ethics,” kabilang ang unang 60-day suspension, ayon sa legal counsel ni Teves na si Ferdinand Topacio.
Bagama’t may kapangyarihan ang Kamara na magpataw ng parusa laban kay Teves, sinabi ni Topacio na nalabag ang karapatan ng kanyang kliyente, “more particularly, the right to due process and equal protection.”
“We are studying our options,” aniya sa isang panayam.
Nasa ibang bansa si Teves mula nang idiin sa pagpatay kay Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo at siyam pa sa tahanan ng gobernador sa Pamplona, Negros Oriental noong March 4. Subalit, nanindigan si Teves na wala siyang kinalaman maging ang kanyang pamilya, sa nasabing krimen.
Ayaw umuwi ni Teves sa Pilipinas dahil sa umano’y banta sa kanyang buhay.
Kasunod ng pagpapalawig ng suspensyon ni Teves, pinaalalahanan ni House Speaker Martin Romualdez ang mga mambabatas “to act at all times in a manner that reflects creditably on the House and…adhere to the spirit and the letter of the rules of the House and the rules of the committees.”
“I would like to reiterate that as members of this House, we must be accountable to the people at all times and perform our legislative mandates with utmost competence, efficiency, effectiveness, integrity, and fidelity to the people’s welfare,” aniya. RNT/SA
