MANILA, Philippines- Dapat ihayag ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at administrasyon ang posisyon nito sa Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (Pogos) sa gitna ng mga panawagang ipagbawal ang mga ito sa bansa dahil sa “social costs,” ayon sa dalawang mambabatas nitong Martes.
Sa hiwalay na okasyon, sinabi nina Senator Risa Hontiveros at Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, dapat basagin ng administrasyon ang katahimikan nito ukol sa Pogos matapos lumabas sa mga imbestigasyon na sangkot ang Pogos sa human trafficking rings, kidnapping, prostitusyon, at torture.
Ayon kay Hontiveros, kung kayang magsalita ni Marcos tungkol sa West Philippine Sea (WPS), dapat din siyang maglabas ng pahayag hinggil sa Pogos.
“I really don’t know what he’s waiting for, as Pagcor said that Pogos are only generating P5 billion despite their rosy promises before. They owe a lot in terms of taxes, and then when you put into the balance all the social and now political costs of Pogo, it seems that it does not have any benefit; it’s only about … the cost to the Philippines,” giit ni Hontiveros sa isang panayam.
“If he can unequivocally push back against China on the West Philippine Sea issues, why does it seem like he is dragging his feet when it comes to Pogos? Or is he waiting for better timing? Is he weighing on something, but there are already several Senate committee investigations done on it … So what is the President waiting for?” dagdag niya.
Kapareho naman nito ang pahayag ni Barbers.
“The social cost of this industry was proven to be so high that…it is not commensurate with the revenues that we are getting, so we should have a strong position about this,” ani Barbers nang tanungin sa isang press briefing kung dapat nang magsalita ng administrasyon ukol sa Pogos.
“The administration should already start talking about this,” pagbibigay-diin niya.
Noong Oktubre 2022, inihayag ni noo’y Press Undersecretary Cheloy Garafil na mahigpit na binabantayan ni Marcos ang mga isyu sa Pogos.
Nito namang Enero 2023, sinabi ni Marcos na hindi siya padalos-dalos sa pagbababawal sa Pogos sa kabila ng mungkahi ng ilang grupo, at binanggit na ang dapat tugisin ay ilegal na Pogos dahil nagbabayad ng buwis ang legal operators. RNT/SA
