RIZAL, Palawan- Inilunsad ang 12 rockets mula sa High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) ng Estados Unidos mula sa dalampasigan ng barangay Kampong Ulay nitong Huwebes sa pagpapatuloy ng mga sundalong Pilipino at Amerikano sa Balikatan military exercises sa western seaboard ng Palawan, na nakaharap sa West Philippine Sea.
Dalawang HIMARS units ang naglunsad sa 12 rockets lampas ala-1 ng hapon bago magsanay ang joint forces ng Philippine at US Marines sa paggamit ng rifles, automatic grenade launchers at cannons sa floating targets halos 8,500 metro mula sa tabing-dagat.
“We are simulating a threat coming to our shorelines and so we are using our multi-domain capabilities to defend our sovereignty,” pahayag ni Brig. Gen. Romulo Quemado II, deputy commander for external defense operations of the Western Command ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
“We will be firing the HIMARS and also yun 105-mm canon natin, yung Howitzer and some other mixed fire and smaller munitions,” aniya.
Ang HIMARS, isang mobile multi-rocket weapon system na binuo sa US, ay unang ginamit sa Balikatan exercises noong 2016.
Kayang umabot ng firing range nito hanggang 300 kilometers o 160 nautical miles, depende sa kargang rocket sa weapon system.
“The fact that we showed that mobility across the frontage of the Philippines I think is really impressive,” pahayag ni US Marines Corps Col. Shawn Dynan, Commander ng 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
“You see each of these systems working together and it’s also our procedural interoperability how we employ these systems… it’s really a great demonstration of that interoperability and that partnership that really defines Balikatan,” dagdag ni Brig. Gen. Bernard Harrington, 1st Multi-Domain Task Force Commander ng US Army.
Para sa Balikatan drills, ginamit ng mga sundalo ang Guided Multiple Launch Rockets (GMLR) na mayroong minimum firing range na halos 80 kilometers, ayon kay Quemado.
“It will simulate firing across for maritime defense,” ayon sa opisyal.
Nang tanungin kung isinagawa ang drill upang depensahan ang Pilipinas laban sa Chinese troops na ilegal na naglalayag sa exclusive economic zone ng Southeast Asian country, sinabi ni Quemado: “That is very speculative.”
“This is quite a distance and we are only firing within our maritime zones and our territory,” giit niya.
“We train ahead of the equipment. We start to build the competencies and the culture to maintain it,” anang opisyal.
“This is very important for all of us,” patuloy niya.
Samantala, nagsagawa ang municipal government ng Rizal ng evacuation drills para sa halos 100 pamilyang naninirahan malapit sa dagat sa Barangay Kampong Ulay kung saan pinairal ang drills.
“Isa din po yun sa layunin ng ating pamahalaang bayan na maging ready sila at maintindihan nila yung mga sitwasyon na ito… na hindi sila magpapanic,” ani Roxanne Escabal, official representative mula sa Office of the Mayor.
“At least magiging ready sila at prepared sila sa kahit ano man, hindi lang ito pero kahit anong calamity ang dadating even if it’s man-made or natural,” pahayag niya.
Ilang ulit ding sinuri ng Philippine at American troops ang exercise area upang matiyak na walang sibilyang mapapahamak sa drills.
Isinasagawa ang 39th Balikatan exercises sa patuloy na pag-igting ng tensyon sa pagitan ng Manila at Beijing sa paggiit ng huli sa na pagmamay-ari nito ang halos kabuuan ng South China Sea, sa kabila ng 2016 international arbitral ruling na bumasura sa claim nito batay sa tinatawag na 9-dash line map.
