MANILA, Philippines- Pinabibilang ni Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero sa Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ang lahat ng overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) na nakakulong at nahaharap sa usaping legal sa abroad.
Sa panayam, sinabi ni Escudero na nagsilbing wake-up call ang pagbabalik ni Mary Jane Veloso mulang Indonesia na nahatulan ng death sentence sa kasong drug trafficking upang pagtuunan ng gobyerno ang iba pang OFWs sa abroad na nahaharap sa katulad na sitwasyon.
Nagdusa si Veloso ng mahigit 14 taon pagkakakulong sa Indonesian prison sa kasong droga.
Hinatulan si Veloso ng Indonesian court ng kamatayan pero hindi siya binitay matapos personal na umapela si dating Pangulong Benigno Aquino III hinggil sa kalagayan nito sa presidente ng naturang bansa.
“This (Veloso’s return) proves that PBBM (President Bongbong Marcos) and his government truly care for Filipinos who are in foreign lands and away from their families,” ayon kay Escudero.
Sa lahat ng pagkakataon, sinabi ni Escudero na dapat madama ng mga Pilipinong nagigipit sa ibang bansa ang tulong ng gobyerno na bibigyan sila ng proteksyon.
“The DFA, through its foreign missions, should also work alongside the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) especially when they are alerted about cases of Filipinos facing legal troubles overseas,” wika ni Escudero.
Aniya, bahagi ng tulong ng gobyerno ang pagsusuri sa pamilya ng apektadong Pilipino kung paano sila makadadalaw sa mahal sa buhay na nakakulong ibang bansa.
Sinabi pa ni Escudero na: “Moreover, the government should explore and push for treaties with more countries that would allow Filipinos convicted in foreign courts to serve their sentences in the Philippines “so that they can be closer to their loved ones.”
“They should find out the nature of the cases against them. What has been or can be done to help them regain their liberty . . . and assist them to make their detention more bearable,” patuloy ng senador. Ernie Reyes
