MANILA, Philippines – Ipinagtanggol ng Philippine National Police (PNP) nitong Lunes ang kanilang paghawak sa isang protesta malapit sa Malacañang, kasunod ng ulat ng pisikal na komprontasyon sa pagitan ng mga pulis, guro at estudyante isang araw bago ang World Teachers’ Day.
Ayon kay PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., batay sa paunang impormasyon, nagsasagawa ang mga pulis ng mga hakbang pangseguridad alinsunod sa umiiral na mga proseso.
“While reports have surfaced regarding the incident, we likewise recognize the presumption of regularity in the performance of official duties, pending the submission of official reports from the ground,” ani Nartatez.
“Our personnel were performing their duties to maintain peace, public order, and security in accordance with established operational procedures,” dagdag niya.
Isinagawa ng Alliance of Concerned Teachers Philippines ang protesta upang igiit ang P50,000 panimulang sahod para sa mga guro, P5,000 Personnel Economic Relief Allowance, at paggasta ng gobyerno na katumbas ng 6% ng gross domestic product para sa edukasyon.
Iniulat na nagkaroon ng pisikal na komprontasyon sa pagitan ng mga nagpoprotesta at mga pulis na nakatalaga sa lugar.
Sinabi ni Nartatez na kinikilala ng PNP ang karapatan ng mga nagpoprotesta na malayang magpahayag ng kanilang mga hinaing, ngunit hinimok silang sumunod sa batas at mga legal na utos ng pulisya para sa kaligtasan ng lahat.
“Our officers’ presence was not intended to prevent them from being heard but to ensure that their activities remain peaceful, orderly, and safe for everyone,” ani Nartatez. RNT/MDS
