MANILA, Philippines- Pananatilihin ng Pilipinas ang resupply troops na nakatalaga sa BRP Sierra Madre sa Ayungin Shoal sa West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Sinabi ni National Security Council (NSC) Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya na nananatiling committed ang Pilipinas na panatilihin ang nakasadsad na warship para igiit ang maritime claims sa lugar.
“Our commitment to maintaining BRP Sierra Madre will always be there. Any attempt by China to interfere with the resupply missions will be met by the Philippines in a fashion that protects our troops, both those doing the RoRe missions and those that are in LS-57,” ayon kay Malaya.
Batid naman aniya ng NSC ang pagkadismaya ng publiko sa situwasyon sa Ayungin Shoal, partikular na ang patuloy na paggamit ng Chinese coast guard at maritime militia vessels ng water cannons at pagsasagawa ng mapanganib na pagmamaniobra laban sa supply vessels ng Pilipinas.
“I know the mood of the public is frustrated. We know the people are frustrated. We have made recommendations to the president about a host of responses to what is happening in Ayungin Shoal with the objective of addressing all these issues. No one is happy that our servicemen are getting hurt,” ayon kay Malaya.
“We are also looking at diplomatic approaches. We hope the incidents in Ayungin Shoal will not happen again, but our resupply missions will never stop,” dagdag na pahayag nito.
Iginiit naman ng Beijing na ang Ayungin Shoal, tinatawag na Ren’ai Reef, ay bahagi ng Nansha Islands ng Tsina.
Makailang-ulit na inihirit ng Tsina ang pag-alis sa BRP Sierra Madre mula sa shoal, tinukoy ang umano’y nakaraang pangako ng Manila. Gayunman, mariing itinanggi ng mga opisyal ng Pilipinas ang bagay na ito.
Ito ang dahilan para magpatawag ng congressional investigation sa umano’y kasunduan na tinawag naman na “Gentleman’s Agreement.” Kris Jose
