A TRUE leader shows up when it matters most.
This was clearly demonstrated by PBGen. Jess Mendez, Director of Police Regional Office 3, when he personally joined the distribution of relief assistance to PRO3 personnel affected by the recent flooding.
What makes this gesture meaningful is that many of these police officers continued reporting for duty and helping flood-stricken communities while their own homes and families were also dealing with the effects of the disaster.
That is the kind of sacrifice that often goes unnoticed.
But Mendez made sure his personnel knew that their sacrifices did not go unnoticed.
By personally being there, the PRO3 chief sent a simple but powerful message: while his men and women are busy protecting and helping others, their organization will also stand by them when they need help.
Leadership is not measured only by operational accomplishments, crime statistics or successful police campaigns. Sometimes, it is measured by how a leader treats his people during their most difficult moments.
Mendez understood that.
His presence at Camp Captain Julian Olivas was more than the distribution of relief goods. It was an expression of concern, appreciation and solidarity with personnel who continued to serve despite their own struggles.
This is the kind of leadership that strengthens an organization from within.
When police officers know that their leader cares for their welfare, they become even more inspired to care for the communities they serve.
Mendez showed that real leadership is not about being in front when things are easy. It is about standing beside your people when times are hardest.
