MANILA, Philippines – Hindi natinag ang pamahalaan ng Pilipinas sa anunsyo ni US President Donald Trump ng bagong 10% global import tariff policy.
“On the part of the Philippines, we will continue to engage with the US,” pahayag ni Finance Secretary Frederick Go sa panayam nitong Sabado, Pebrero 21.
Si Go ang special assistant for Investment and Economic Affairs ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na nanguna sa negosasyon para sa karagdagang exemptions at pagpapababa ng tariff rate para sa mga produktong Pinoy na pumapasok sa America sa 19%.
“US remains an important trading and investment partner, and a stable and predictable arrangement with the US will be very beneficial to our stakeholders both foreign and domestic,” ayon sa Finance chief.
Nitong Sabado, pinirmahan ni Trump ang executive orders na nagpapataw ng bagong taripa simula sa Martes sa ilalim ng Section 122 ng Trade Act of 1974, na nagpapalit sa taripa ng 10% hanggang 50% sa ilalim ng 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act na idineklara ng Korte Suprema na illegal.
Ipinagpapatuloy sa pinakabagong mga kautusan ni Trump ang umiiral na exemptions.
Para sa Pilipinas, kabilang sa exempted products na sakop ng dating tariff policy ay ang exports ng electronics at semiconductors at agricultural produce gaya ng coconuts, pineapples, bananas, and mangoes.
Sa komentaryo, sinabi ni Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro na, “[Finance] Secretary Go had previously explained that the majority of our exports were already exempted even before this US SC decision.” RNT/JGC
