MANILA, Philippines – Naghain si Senator Imee Marcos ng resolusyon na humihiling ng imbestigasyon ng Senado sa pangangailangan sa tubig at kuryente at pangmatagalang epekto sa kalikasan ng planong Pax Silica industrial hub.
Sa proposed Resolution No. 547, kinilala ni Marcos ang layunin ng proyekto na makahikayat ng foreign investment, lumikha ng trabaho, at pasiglahin ang ekonomiya. Gayunman, binanggit niya ang mga pangamba sa epekto nito sa paggamit ng lupa, agrikultura, kabuhayan, at ecological stability.
“The biggest concern raised by environmental and scientific organizations is not the technology itself, but the enormous amount of water and electricity needed to keep AI systems and large-scale data centers running because unlike conventional office buildings, AI data centers ans servers inevitable generate intense heat and must be continuously cooled to prevent equipment failure which require vast quantities of clean water, while the servers themselves require a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply 24 hours a day,” nakasaad sa resolusyon.
“Aside from concerns relating to water supply, environmental groups have likewise raised questions regarding the substantial electricity requirements of the proposed hub, emphasizing that the source of such power is equally critical, as increased reliance on fossil fuels to meet the project’s energy demands could result in higher greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbate environmental and climate-related risks,” dagdag nito.
Nagbabala si Marcos na maaaring mabawasan ang access ng mga magsasaka sa irigasyon, tumaas ang singil sa utilities ng mga kabahayan, at madagdagan ang pressure sa lupa at kabuhayan ng mga lokal at Indigenous community dahil sa malaking pangangailangan ng proyekto sa mga likas na yaman.
Hiniling din niya na suriin ang koordinasyon at transparency ng mga ahensya, partikular ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, at National Irrigation Administration.
Nauna nang sinabi ng Malacañang na dapat idulog sa mga kinauukulang ahensya ang mga isyu sa proyekto, dahil maaari pang baguhin ang ilang probisyon ng United States-led initiative.
Sa kaniyang ikalimang State of the Nation Address, sinabi ni President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. na magbibigay ng dekalidad na trabaho sa mga Pilipino ang Pax Silica, isang 1,600-hectare artificial intelligence-focused industrial complex na itatayo sa New Clark City, Tarlac. RNT
