ETHICAL GUIDELINES VITAL ON DEPED ‘AI’ INTEGRATION

NAVOTAS City Rep. Toby Tiangco, House Committee on Information and Communications Technology chairman, has urged the Department of Education to establish ethical guidelines as it integrates artificial intelligence technology into education delivery.

“We have to accept that AI is already part of our lives, so we must ensure it is utilized properly. While technology is an empowering tool for Filipino students, we also need to protect them from its potential risks.”

Lauding the efforts of the education department in utilizing AI in its learning modalities and delivery, he then cited the importance of guidelines to protect teachers and students from inaccurate information and potentially harmful interactions.

“We don’t want these tech tools to hamper their development in any form or expose them to predatory online practices,” he added.

Add’l cash aid for pregnant, mothers backed

Tiangco threw his full support for the Department of Social Welfare and Development additional cash aid for pregnant women and mothers with children aged 0 to 2 years.

“I welcome the administration’s efforts to expand the benefits under the 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program), especially since this directly supports mothers.”

He stressed that maternal health is vital to public health because it safeguards the well-being of mothers and ensures newborns are born healthy.

Moreover, he noted that the DSWD’s F1KD (first 1, 000 days of a child’s life) program aligns with the administration’s commitment to combat stunting and malnutrition.

PNP IT systems upgrade needed

The Navotas congressman has also welcomed the decision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to reallocate P500-million from the Philippine National Police’s intelligence fund to restore the budget for its information technology programs.

“Cyberspace is a rapidly changing landscape and we need to ensure that our law enforcement agencies are always up to date.”

Supporting the move all-out, Tiangco stressed that it promotes transparency in government while equipping the PNP to combat cybercrimes and address cybersecurity challenges.

“I totally support the President’s decision because it ensures the PNP is prepared to tackle threats like phishing, scams, and identity theft while promoting accountability,” Tiangco added.

He also underscored the importance of improving the PNP’s 911 system, noting that a significant number of emergency hotline requests are pranks.
