CORRUPTION continues to plague the country, hitting us hardest in critical infrastructure projects like flood control.

The recent revelation of ghost flood control projects in Bulacan, where billions of pesos were misappropriated, is a glaring example of the entrenched graft in our system.

This mirrors the infamous Napoles pork barrel scam, where public funds were diverted to enrich a few at the expense of the many.

These aren’t simple mistakes; they are deliberate acts of theft.

Funds meant for vital infrastructure like flood prevention are being channeled into fake contracts and phantom projects, leaving vulnerable communities at the mercy of nature, while the guilty go unchecked.

This crisis is worsened by the lack of leadership in the Office of the Ombudsman. With the retirement of Ombudsman Samuel Martires, the office is now without a permanent leader, relying on an officer-in-charge.

The absence of a strong, independent Ombudsman is a serious issue in the fight against corruption. Investigations are delayed, accountability is weakened, and graft festers in the absence of leadership.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. must act swiftly to appoint a permanent Ombudsman who is not a politician and has no political past. This is crucial to ensure the office remains free from political influence and corruption.

Only an incorruptible and fearless leader can restore public trust and ensure justice is served.

The Ombudsman must work closely with agencies like the Commission on Audit, Bureau of Internal Revenue, National Bureau of Investigation and Anti-Money Laundering Council to root out corruption and bring wrongdoers to justice.

The Filipino people have had enough of scandals and corrupt officials. We need an Ombudsman who will take bold action.

Mr. President, appoint a strong, fearless Ombudsman now — it’s not just bureaucracy, it’s the key to ending corruption at its roots.

The millions of Juan and Maria deserve better, and the time to act is now.
