MANILA, Philippines – Humiling ang Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) nitong Lunes, Setyembre 28 ng transition period bago tuluyang buwagin ang travel tax.
Anila, ang pondo na nakukuha rito ay may malaking bahagi na napupunta sa tourism-related infrastructure.
Ito ang hiniling ni Tieza Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid sa budget hearing ng Department of Tourism sa Senate finance subcommittee.
“Regarding the issue of travel tax, definitely we will be deeply affected because 94 percent to 95 percent of our operation is coming from travel tax… We humbly request that maybe we can first have a transition period for the travel tax,” sinabi ni Lapid.
Ipinaliwanag niya na kalahati ng mga nakokolektang travel tax o nasa P4.03 bilyon ay nagpopondo sa Tieza-initiated projects, habang ang kalahati ay napupunta sa Commission on Higher Education at National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Kabilang sa mga proyekto ng Tieza ay ang pagtugon sa kalidad ng tubig sa El Nido, pagtatayo ng sewage plant sa Coron, at rehabilitasyon ng domestic airport at sewage treatment plant sa Baguio.
May tungkulin din ang Tieza na ibalik ang apat na historical hotel at landmark properties, maging ang pagpapaunlad sa Club Intramuros Golf Course at Zamboanga Golf Course.
Ani Lapid, hindi naglaan ang Department of Budget and Management ng pondo para sa mga proyekto ng Tieza sa fiscal year 2027 na mas magpapahirap sa ahensya na maipagpatuloy ang mga proyekto.
Sa kabila nito, nilinaw niya na ang Tieza ay hindi tutol sa pag-alis sa travel tax at sa halip ay humiling ng budget allocation.
“We don’t object with any notion of the abolition but as of now, with the current fiscal situation, our agency will have a little difficulty not only us but also the tourism industry when it comes to the infra support, maybe there will be a little consideration to expand it,” sinabi ni Lapid.
“We humbly seek requesting that perhaps there be an extension while there is no money to replace the travel tax,” dagdag pa niya.
Nangako naman si finance panel vice chair Sen. Erwin Tulfo na titingnan ng komite ang hinanaing ng Tieza at sinabing makikipagpulong ito sa DBM para tugunan ang kulang na pondo para sa tourism infrastructure. RNT/JGC
