MANILA, Philippines – Isang panukalang batas sa Kamara ang naglalayong magbigay ng travel tax exemption para sa mga estudyante, senior citizens, at Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
Ang House Bill 6979 na inihain ni 1Tahanan Partylist Rep. Nathan Oducado ay naglalayong gawing “progressive and fair” ang travel tax sa pamamagitan ng pagtanggal ng bayarin sa piling sektor.
“For many of them, the travel tax represents a substantial additional cost that restricts mobility, limits family reunification, and hampers access to overseas opportunities… These realities highlight the need to review and update the current travel tax framework,” ani Oducado.
Dagdag pa niya, layon ng panukala ang isang sistemang mas makatarungan at sensitibo sa kalagayang pang-ekonomiya ng mga Pilipino.
“Doing so eases the burden on those least able to afford it while maintaining necessary revenue for national development programs,” sabi niya.
Sa kasalukuyan, ang travel tax ay P2,700 para sa first class at P1,620 para sa economy class passengers.
Noong Nobyembre 2025, naghain din si Sen. Erwin Tulfo ng panukalang alisin nang tuluyan ang travel tax, dahil umano’y hadlang ito sa karapatan ng publiko na bumiyahe.
“If we really want to improve the country’s tourism sector and be at par with our neighboring Southeast Asian countries, we have to remove these barriers that disempower Filipinos to travel,” ani Tulfo. RNT/MND
