A MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH STRONG GROUP – PILIPINAS

I do not consider myself a basketball fan, but sometimes life throws you into unexpected moments of pride. In July, while waiting to board my flight to Taiwan, I found myself surrounded by towering athletes. They were hard to miss—taller than everyone around them, with excited passengers eagerly asking for selfies. It didn’t take long for me to realize I was in the presence of the Strong Group-Pilipinas basketball team, on their way to compete in the 43rd William Jones Cup.

Had I known they would be playing in Taiwan, I would have tried to catch one of their games. As someone who doesn’t typically watch basketball, I was amazed at their presence—not just because of their height, but because they exuded confidence and charisma, and their popularity was clear from the number of fans greeting them.

Basketball has always held a special place in the hearts of Filipinos. It is not just a sport; it is woven into the fabric of our culture, from makeshift courts in small barangays to the bright lights of international arenas. Strong Group-Pilipinas was carrying that legacy with them, as they embarked on yet another international campaign to showcase Filipino excellence in basketball.

Little did I know, this team was about to bring home glory once again. Strong Group-Pilipinas went on to dominate the William Jones Cup, winning all eight of their games, despite facing challenges such as injuries and illnesses that sidelined some of their key players. Their victories over teams from Australia, Japan, the United States, and other countries further cemented the Philippines; standing as a basketball powerhouse. This was not a new experience for the Philippines. Strong Group-Pilipinas’ victory in 2024 marked our seventh Jones Cup title, continuing a proud tradition of Filipino dominance in the tournament.

In recognition of this outstanding accomplishment, the Senate adopted on Tuesday a resolution commending the team for their hard work and success. Present to receive their plaques of recognition were Ange Kouame, Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando, Jordan Heading, RJ Abarrientos, Dave Ildefonso. Geo Chiu, Caelan Tiongson, Allen Liwag, Tony Ynot, Jonathan Manalili, DJ Fenner, Chris McCullough, and Tajuan Agee, as well as head coaches Charles Tiu and Rajko Toroman and assistant coach Paulo Maligalig, Though I missed the chance to see them in action in Taiwan, I saw firsthand how loved and admired they are.

To Strong Group-Pilipinas, thank you for once again bringing pride to our country.
