MANILA, Philippines – Nanawagan ang social aid at development arm ng Simbahang Katolika kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na makipagtulungan na lamang sa imbestigasyon ng International Criminal Court kaugnay sa war on drugs ng kanyang administrasyon.
Ito ay kasunod ng pagkakaaresto kay Duterte nitong Martes ng umaga.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ng Caritas Philippines na nauna nang nagpahayag si Duterte ng kahandaan na tanggapin ang pag-aresto sa kanya sa oras na mag-isyu ng warrant ang ICC.
“We call on him to honor this commitment and fully submit to the rule of law,” pahayag ni Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, pangulo ng Caritas Philippines.
“True justice is not about political allegiance or personal loyalty—it is about accountability, transparency, and the protection of human dignity. We urge Duterte to uphold his own words and submit himself to the legal process,” dagdag pa.
Ang tinutukoy ni Bishop Bagaforo ay ang kumpirmasyon ng Malakanyang na si Duterte ay nasa kustodiya ng mga awtoridad matapos arestuhin dahil sa crimes against humanity.
Matatandaang iniimbestigahan ng ICC ang mga umano’y crimes against humanity dahil sa war on drugs ng administrasyong Duterte.
Samantala, nanawagan naman ang Caritas Philippines sa mga taga-suporta at ka-alyado ni Duterte na “set aside personal loyalty and choose to stand with the rule of law.”
“This moment calls for leaders to prioritize justice and the common good over partisan interests. Justice cannot be selective; it must apply to all, regardless of power or position,” sinabi ng Caritas Philippines.
Hinimok ng Caritas ang administrasyong Marcos na makipagtulungan din sa ICC at payagan ang impartial investigation.
“If the government has nothing to hide, it has nothing to fear,” sinabi ng Caritas Philippines.
“The rule of law must prevail. Justice must be served. Let this be a turning point for our nation—a step toward healing, accountability, and real change,” dagdag pa. RNT/JGC
