VALENZUELA PAYS TRIBUTE TO TYPHOON ‘CARINA’ HEROES

THE Valenzuela City government has taken the time to pay tribute to the groups and volunteers “who risked their lives to protect others’ lives” during the wrath of Typhoon ‘Carina’ and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

In a simple ceremony held at the City Hall complex, Mayor Wes Gatchalian led other key local officials in recognizing the various government agencies, non-government and civic organizations and volunteers as well as village residents.

Those cited were the personnel and volunteers from the Valenzuela City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Liga ng mga Barangay, City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Command and Coordinating Center, Philippine Red Cross, Philippine Coast Guard  and its Ecumenical Chaplain Service, City Police Station, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Fire Protection and Philippine Army Reservists, among others.

“It’s simply proper to recognize these modern-day heroes who risked their own lives to save others’ lives at the height of the typhoon and ‘habagat.’ We are all so proud of you,” said Gatchalian as he spoke before them.

“They gave their time and best especially during the rescue operations wherein many residents were brought to safer grounds due to the rising floodwaters while others attended to the flood victims at the evacuation centers,” he added

A certificate of commendation and financial assistance were also given to the three employees of the Waste Management Office and City Veterinary Office who’re injured while doing their tasks during the calamity.

Gatchalian also took the chance to give a posthumous service award to Romel Pondevida, former City Environment and Natural Resources Office chief, whom he described as a dedicated and competent public servant.

“We’re truly blessed to have individuals who are ready to help during the typhoon. We are extending our gratitude to these individuals and organizations who are ready to risk their lives for their fellow ‘Valenzuelanos’,” he said.

The occasion would serve as a reminder of the collective effort of the city government and its people amid the challenging times, the mayor added.
